Q&A: What is
a Powercard?
A PowerCard is a very powerful,
yet small, set of electronics that allows you to take control of your
fuel injection system and add fuel when your engine needs it. PowerCard
ushers in the latest in tuning science gone is the old throttle
position and RPM (Alpha-N) based tuning, replaced by PowerCard's powerful
and highly effective LOAD BASED tuning methodology. Fuel is added based
on the load of the motor, rather than the position of the throttle. Is the Powercard
worth it? If you're happy with the way your bike is running, and there are no flat spots in performance, then the Powercard probably won't yield much gain. The Powercard is particularly effective in eliminating low and mid throttle/load conditions. These conditions are endemic on Ducati 5.9 ECUs (Those on Post 2001 Ducatis). What if
I don't like the Powercard? If you don't like the changes that the Powercard makes, it is a simple affair to disable it's settings. In this case, the bike returns to its original mapping. Is the Powercard
easy to install? It doesn't take much in the way of mechanical skills to install the Powercard. The card plugs inline between the plugs that connect to the fuel injectors. There is nothing to splice and the Powercard is non-invasive. A separate ground wire connects to the negative battery terminal. Once you have access to the injectors (removing the airbox), installation takes 5 minutes. Where do
I mount the Powercard? The powercard has a cord long enough to reach under the tail or around the instrument panel. The unit is much smaller than competing manufacturer fuel-mapping modifiers, so placement is much easier. The Powercard mounts with provided hook and loop fasteners. If DT sells
it, does that mean that DT uses it? You bet. I installed the powercard on three different bikes before considing them for resale. First, it fixed low end problems on a customer's MTS1000, then boosted off-idle and midrange performance on an '02 998, and finally fixed the backfiring on my '04 MTS1000. Does the
Powercard come with pre-installed fuel maps and can additional maps be
downloaded? The powercard will come set up for your particular application. Tuning of the Powercard is performed right on the card. You can modify the mapping without downloading additional maps. The included instructions make it easy to adjust. There's no hooking up to a PC or PDA needed. The Powercard
is over $100 cheaper than competing F/I Boxes. Why? The Powercard was developed by Dobeck performance. The founder of Dobeck performance used to work at Dynojet. His goal with the Powercard was to develop a smaller, easier, and more cost effective alternative product. After installing and using the product, I'd have to say the mission has been accomplished. Won't I
need an CO meter and a Dyno to properly tune the bike with the Powercard? Most owners will find that the Powercards works great right out of the box. Additional tuning can be done by an owner without a Dyno. However, to truly optimize a bike, the map should be modified with results from a Dyno with a CO meter. This fact holds true for bikes without F/I boxes as well. Is the Powercard
available for Ducati's not on the application list? I'm sorry, but the only applications that have been tested are those listed in the drop-down menu. Additional new models will be added to support future Ducatis. There is no timetable for this, and I am at the mercy of the vendor for updates. Is the Powercard
built well? The casing and wiring are water resistant, and are equal to or greater than the quality of Ducati wiring. Let me rephrase that.... the Powercard's electonics are well built, and the constuction of the box is water resistant. Will the
Powercard void my Warranty? Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, owners may modify their vehicles without fear of the warrenty be voided. The Powercard does not alter the way the bike runs. It doesn't interfere with any electronics, it simply reads the pulses sent from the ECU to the injectors and alter the amount of fuel that the injectors deliver.
Testimonial: I have the power card installed on my bike and could not be happier. The simple difference is the the Power Commander makes adjustments at the ECU level and the Power Card makes adjustments to amount of fuel to cylinders between ECU and injectors. (LT Comment - Not true Larry. The PCIII and the Powercard both add fuel downstream of the ECU by reading the pulse width of the injector pulse). Gone is any lean spots under acceleration or deceleration. At the time the card was installed I hand installed a complete Staintune System as well as a Full Monty Clutch (reduces rotating weight by 3.5 lbs) a 6K service and the bike is a completely different bike. At least 20 to 25% quicker that pre card, exhaust, clutch and service. The difference is amazing. FYI, all done by LT at www.desmotimes.com the supplier of the Power Card and clutch. Additionally, I have no connection other than a happy customer. LS - New Orleans, LA Note: The above quote was forwarded to me from the multistrada.net site. Glad you like the bike now Larry. - LT
