VDST Software - $199.99

I've been using VDST software for years to troubleshoot Ducati fuel injection. Included are the hook ups to go to a PC and the software. The software is Windows compatible, and the hardware connects to a 9-pin serial port. Kit includes plastic hard case, software, and hardware interface cables. It isn't designed to work with Apple computers or non-windows based PCs or Notebook computers. The version I stock is for PCs/Notebooks only. If you want a version for a PDA running mobile-windows or the Palm OS contact me.

If you have a new computer without a 9-pin serial port, you'll need the USB adapter I sell above.

The version of the VDST sold here will work with a single model of ECU. If you want the Pro version, contact me. It costs $849, but will work with all ECUs.

Once connected to the bike, you can use the software to disable the maintenance light, reset the TPS, read error codes, set the trim, etc. It's an essential do-it-yourself tool to optimize and troubleshoot fuel injected Ducatis. It also gives real-time data of engine parameters.

If you're not sure of the model of ECU you have, use the pictures below.

Note 1: The VDST has alligator clips that attach to the bike's battery. The alligator clips are color coded red and black. If you reverse polarity (hook the positive lead up to the negative battery terminal), there is a risk of damaging the bike's electronics due to a weak ground circuit for Ducati ECUs.

Note 2: The VDST Software will NOT work with the P7 ECU on the 851 and 907ie.

Note 3: The VDST will NOT work on P8 and 16M ECUs with aftermarket chips. The VDST will work with DP/Termi chips/ECU or the original chip.

Note 4: The VDST will NOT work on 15M ECUs that have been flashed.

Note 5: Don't send me an email asking what ECU you have. Use the pictures and the chart below to identify your ECU. The ECU is either located underneath the seat or next to the battery. If you're still not sure, contact a Ducati dealer for the version of ECU.

Q&A:

Q: I have two ducatis with different ECUs. If I purchase the VDST, will it work on both bikes?

A: The version I sell is a single-ECU version of VDST. It comes preconfigured for your particular ECU model. If you have 2 Ducatis with the same model of ECU, then yes, purchasing one VDST will be all you need. However, if you have two Ducatis - one with a 59M ECU and one with a P8 ECU, then you'd need to purchase two VDST. The other option is to purchase the pro version, which sells for $849. Unless you are a shop, or own 5 Ducatis with different ECUs, the Pro Model isn't really cost effective.

Q: Is this really a worthwhile thing for a do it yourselfer to use?

A: I had the same reservations when I purchased it many years ago. At first, I didn't use it much. Later I found that the reason I didn't use it was because I was scared that I'd do something to the bike. In hindsight, it was a foolish notion. I rely on my VDST to maintain my own fleet of Ducks. It is simple to use, and I think its worth it. Its the only option we have to really tune the current crop of Ducatis ourselves. The Dealer Mathesis tester or DDS system costs thousands of dollars (and is unobtainable unless you're a dealer), so I find the VDST worth every penny. Like the rest of the stuff I sell, I wouldn't sell it if I didn't use it. I've been using it since 2000, and it has never let me down.

Q: How do I know if I have an incompatible ECU?

A:If you have a P8 or 16M ECU simply pull the top cover (P8) or rubber cover (16M) and look at the chip on the motorboard. If it is aftermarket, it will state the brand on the chip. The 15M ECU doesn't take a chip. Instead it has a flashable memory. There is no way of telling if it has been flashed unless you talk to the previous owner. If it has been flashed, the VDST won't work. If you have a 59M ECU, the VDST will work with either the stock ECU, a DP ECU or a Termi ECU. The only other company that makes an ECU for the 5.9 is FIM in Australia. If the sticker says Ducati, Termi or DP, you're good to go.
